Join Paul and Jane Kent, who will take us on a sailing trip around the Spice Islands of Eastern Indonesia on Wednesday, September 21/22 at 10am via ZOOM. This 2-week cruise was on board a traditional wooden phinisi. There was an on board expert to explain the nature, history and culture of this fascinating part of the world. The influences of the competing European powers (the Netherlands, Spain, Portugal and Britain) will be discussed and they will explain how an island 3km across changed the history of the world. The culture and lifestyles of the local people will also be touched on. They will share tales of visits to traditional villages, markets and schools where supplies were donated.

Paul retired in 2020 after working in a number of countries around the world. He lived and worked in Indonesia between 2010 and 2017. Jane is originally a biochemist, while living in Indonesia she was a member of the Indonesian Heritage Society. She was an English language guide at the National Museum in Jakarta and from 2014 -2017 led the instruction program with the Indonesian Heritage Society for new English language guides at the museum.
