Peter Miasek, President Transport Action Ontario and fellow IOL annuitant will present his overview of the GTA transportation status and outlook. This is an update to the presentation he made to EACTN in November, 2023
With rapid population growth and high traffic congestion, there is a need to build more transportation capacity in the Toronto region. Lead by the Province, many good new public transit projects and betterments are underway, but more are needed. The Province is also planning controversial new expressways – the Bradford Bypass, Highway 413, potentially a tunnel under Highway 401 and potentially reduced tolls on Highway 407.
The new expressways are facing significant public opposition, as research has shown they just fill up again due to the phenomenon of induced demand, and have environmental and community impacts. Boosting transit in the GTA is not without its challenges. Operating funding has not kept pace with the need to maintain and improve service, while capital costs for new projects are skyrocketing.
Peter will summarize the exciting and complex status and future of public transit and expressways in the Toronto Region. This will be an informative update to a topic on the minds of many who are living through transportation related construction projects and their associated delays.
Peter is actively involved in numerous advocacy initiatives for sustainable transportation and improved urban planning including the Unionville Residents’ Association and the Markham Cycling and Pedestrian Advisory Committee.
