Come and join us on November 4, 2023 to the Metropolitan Opera rebroadcast in High Definition of the “DEAD MAN WALKING” . Music by the American composer Jake Heggie, libretto by Terrence McNally.

This compelling masterpiece is the most widely performed new opera of the last 20 years. Based on Sister Helen Prejean’s memoir about her fight for the soul of a condemned murderer. This powerful story recalls Sister Helen’s prose and her advocacy style: direct, unaffected, and unflinchingly honest—but not without a deep understanding of the heart and humanity inside each one of us.

Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin takes the podium for this landmark premiere, with mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato starring as Sister Helen. The outstanding cast also features bass-baritone Ryan McKinny as the death-row inmate Joseph De Rocher, soprano Latonia Moore as Sister Rose, and legendary mezzo-soprano Susan Graham as De Rocher’s mother.

The world premiere took place at the San Francisco Opera in 2000 with Sister Helen sung by Susan Graham.

The performance lasts approximately 3 hours with one 30-minutes intermission

The 23/24 Metropolitan Opera season opened on September 26, 2023 with this bold and audacious opera about love and forgiveness. Here’s one of many raving reviews: REVIEW – Financial Times

Content Advisory: Dead Man Walking contains a depiction of a rape and murder, as well as other adult themes and strong language.
