Golf League

The EACTN Golf League organizes golf games every Tuesday from April to November.

Games rotate between 4 venues, with a detailed schedule issued in the early spring.

Other Golf events are held annually, in addition to the weekly League games. An annual “Golf Celebration and Awards Day” event is held, generally on the first Tuesday of September,  including dinner and distribution of prizes and gifts. A “Nine and Dine” golf event is also held in the June/July timeframe. These events are announced via the usual EACTN Club events posting process, including email to all “registered” golfers.

EACTN Golf League History

The beginnings of the EACTN Golf League are lost in time but it is known that many colleagues played together when they were working for Imperial Oil so it was natural they would want to continue those connections when they retired. Early organizers included Gerry O’Neill, Bob Moir, Gilles Barbeau, Phil Haley and Dave West.

In the early days, the Rules of Golf were generally followed, with a few “exceptions”.
Golfers contributed a toonie and cash prizes were handed out each week for 1st , 2nd and 3rd places, along with closest to the pin. Handicaps were maintained so all had a
chance to win if they had a good day. When the company’s head office moved to
Calgary, an influx of new annuitants in Toronto and area added more names to the
roster and some weeks saw as many as forty or more golfers playing.

Around the time of COVID, the cash prizes were eliminated, rules became more relaxed
but the League continued weekly during the season with the annual “Golf Celebration and Awards Day” on the Tuesday after Labour Day.

The League owes a debt of gratitude to those who organized and maintained it during
its early days and to the schedulers, handicappers and tournament organizers through
the years.
