Come and join us on April 27, 2024 to the MET in HD rebroadcast of Gounod’s ROMEO-et-JULIETTE.

Two singers at the height of their powers—radiant soprano Nadine Sierra and tenor sensation Benjamin Bernheim—come together as the star-crossed lovers in Gounod’s sumptuous Shakespeare adaptation, with Met Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin on the podium to conduct one of the repertoire’s most romantic scores.

This Met production moves the action to the 18th century. Shakespeare’s most enduringly successful love story, Roméo et Juliette is set during French Romanticism, a tradition that values subtlety, sensuality, and graceful vocal delivery over showy effects. In the opera there is greater focus on the two lovers, who are given four irresistible duets, including a brief final reunion in the tomb scene that does not appear in the play.

The opera is sung in French with English surtitles.

The performance lasts 3 hours and 10 minutes that includes one 35 minutes intermission.

Event logistics

This rebroadcast will take place at the Empress Walk Cineplex (5095 Yonge St 3rd Floor) on Saturday April 27, 2024 starting at NOON. The box office opens at 11:30. We recommend arriving at least 15 minutes before showtime to the 3rd floor lobby to get your ticket, and meet with EACTN friends.

The continued use of face masks is strongly recommended while attending  the event at Theater #8 of Cineplex. While not mandatory, wearing a mask is a small measure that we can all take to keep ourselves and audience communities safe.

We offer an Après-Opera program for those interested to socialize or have a post-opera chat. Details will be provided a few weeks before the  actual event

The Empress Walk Cineplex is accessible by subway from the North York Centre  TTC station. Parking is available under the building, entrance is from Hillcrest Ave; first 3 hrs free, 4th hour at $1, then regular rates.
