A Tour of Chris Hodgson’s Wine Cellar @ Via Zoom
Dec 13 @ 13:00 – 14:00

Want to learn more about wines? Wine pairing? Wine cellars? And (optionally) enjoy a glass while doing so? Then you’ve come to the right place!

EACTN presents A Tour of Chris Hodgson’s Wine Cellar!

Chris is an IOL retiree, an ERAC Club member, who lives in Calgary, after an illustrious career in our fine company! For those of us who have known Chris over years, we will surely recall that Chris was always the “go to” guy for advice on wine.

Chris has recommended that participants purchase one of these 3 wines, to be opened and “discovered” during the zoom event. He has selected a white, a red, and a frugal alternative for those of us watching our wallets!

WHITE – Masi Masianco Pinot Grigio (Italy) LCBO # 620773, $20.00
RED – Tom Gore Cabernet Sauvignon (California) LCBO # 451336, $19.95
LOWER COST RED ALTERNATIVE – Santa Rita 120 Reserva Especial Cabernet Sauvignon (Chile) LCBO # 218644, $12.55

Additional options for those “in the mood”:

  • prepare and enjoy paired appetizers
  • take a photo of your wine storage and display it as your background during the call
  • be prepared to share your “go to” wines, wine source and buying tricks

All of this is, of course totally optional, and you’re welcome to attend the zoom session with no wine glass in hand! This session is for YOU – weather your wine cellar looks like the one on the left, or the one on the right!

This is a free event but please register to attend. If after registering you find that you are unable to attend, please let the organizer know by sending an email to members@eactn.ca.

Please note that this is a joint event with the Calgary Annuitant Club (ERAC), so we will have participants from both EACTN and ERAC at this event.

The ZOOM link will be sent to those who are registered the day before the presentation. The ZOOM session will open at 12:30pm (half hour earlier) to allow some time to chat before the presentation You can find a document on how to use Zoom here.

9 Hole Golf Offer Survey @ Online Survey
Jan 1 @ 12:00 – Jan 2 @ 12:15

Starting 2024, any EACTN member who wishes to golf in our League, will be able to periodically golf a 9-hole round. This brief survey is designed to help us better understand the interests and needs of our EACTN membership, as it pertains to golf. Here is a summary:

  • Our Golf League has historically offered a weekly opportunity to golf a full 18 hole round of golf (every Tuesday)
  • While the current model has been successful, our belief is that some golfers  might prefer a 9-hole option for a variety of reasons (e.g. shorter time commitment and less physical effort)
  • Some of these might be golfers who currently play 18-holes, but might prefer a 9-hole option, while others who might not have chosen to participate in an 18-hole offer, would be open to a 9-hole option, if available.

As such, we ask you to please take a few minutes to complete this very brief survey to help us better understand the potential. For the survey, please assume:

  • We will offer you the opportunity to play a 9-hole round on all outings to one of our golf venues – Westview Golf Course, in Aurora
  • Our annual golf league schedule will clearly communicate which Tuesdays this option would be available (about 1 out of every 3 weeks, which amounts to about 10 games during the golf season)
  • 9-hole golfers would pay a lower 9-hole green-fee versus the 18-hole golfers

A quick reminder that our EACTN Golf League is a simple “show up and play” model:

  • There is no cost to “join the League”. We simply ask that you register in the Spring so we know who to send the weekly golf invitation emails-to
  • There is no weekly commitment. If you can only play a few rounds here and there, that’s OK. If you want to come out every week, even better
  • You don’t need to “belong to a foursome”. We create a schedule each week and rotate golfers to encourage social networking
  • We don’t collect scorecards, or manage Golf Handicaps – we all just play golf and have fun!

Just to be clear, if you currently golf 18-hole rounds, and wish to continue to do so, this change will not effect you in any way.

Please complete and submit the survey below before December 31, 2023.

2024 – Opera Outing – Florencia en el Amazonas – MET rebroadcast @ Empress Walk Cineplex
Feb 3 @ 12:00 – 14:30

Come and join us on February 3, 2024 to the MET in HD rebroadcast of  FLORENCIA-en-el-AMAZONAS.

The opera tells an enchanting story of a Brazilian opera diva who returns to her homeland to perform at the legendary Manaus Opera House and to search for her lost butterfly-hunter lover, who has vanished into the jungle. Manaus is the last big city on banks of Rio Negro, a tributary of Amazon River in northwestern Brazil. It’s a major departure point for the surrounding Amazon Rainforest.

The Met premiere stars soprano Ailyn Pérez as Florencia Grimaldi, with Yannick Nézet-Séguin on the podium to lead a spellbinding new production by Mary Zimmerman that brings the mysterious and magical realm of the Amazon to the Met stage.

Composed in 1996 by Mexican composer Daniel Catán. It’s only the third opera sung in Spanish at the MET.

The opera is sung in Spanish with English surtitles. The performance lasts 2 hours and 15 minutes that includes one 30 minutes intermission.

Event logistics

This rebroadcast will take place at the Empress Walk Cineplex (5095 Yonge St 3rd Floor) on Saturday February 3, 2024 starting at NOON. The box office opens at 11:30. We recommend arriving at least 15 minutes before showtime to the 3rd floor lobby to get your ticket, and meet with EACTN friends.

The continued use of face masks is strongly recommended while attending  the event at Theater #8 of Cineplex. While not mandatory, wearing a mask is a small measure that we can all take to keep ourselves and audience communities safe.

We offer an Après-Opera program for those interested to socialize or have a post-opera chat. Details will be provided a few weeks before the  actual event

The Empress Walk Cineplex is accessible by subway from the North York Centre  TTC station. Parking is available under the building, entrance is from Hillcrest Ave; first 3 hrs free, 4th hour at $1, then regular rates.

Registrations close on January 27, 2024.  We regret that we shall not be able to give credit for cancellations after this date.
